Not sure if this is of any interest to anyone but we managed to photograph this on a recent trip to Zimbabwe.  It's not the best photo but we only had a phone!

Surprised there is any wildlife left even if it is a gecko. I hear they go well with tomato pot with beans.

We saw loads of exciting lizards, ghekos, a salamander and a chameleon (the most exciting of all for me).  As intrepid adventurers we even found steaks and Coca Cola, bread and lions eluded us though!

It doesn't look real, it looks more like a toy does that.
I wanted presents from lots of you. Snot fair that Ben Rigsby was the only one to send me Xmas & birthday presents.

It's really beautiful.   Defo an odd colour though.   I didn't know white ones existed!

Nor did I, nor did the Zims I was staying with.   They wanted to save it for me as a pet (I said no, so it probably has ended up in a stew as a previous person has suggested!).

I have had real trouble getting peeps on this site to believe I have albino newts in my pond (not that I have seen any for ages), but it does seem to me that colourless amphibians are more common than everyone thinks!

A bit like little egrets, according to most books I have, they don't come to UK, but I am in no doubt I watched one for about 15 mins a couple of weeks ago. (Really bad photos available if anyone interested)

Ther are egrets in the UK, mainly dotted around south coast, certainly good few around Poole harbour.

There are quite a few egrets in N. Wales as well.

OK, so IÆm new to this site and havenÆt fully browsed it yet or learnt lots about amphibians yet à..so whatÆs an egret? Can you post your rubbish photos kateatcrowlas please?

Albino newts sound fab! I bet theyÆre real cute.

Hope the white gheko didnÆt end up in some stew.

To Baby Sue

An egret is a bird, a bit like a heron, sorry, went totally off topic then!  I think my point was that just because people haven't seen many of something, doesn't mean they aren't there.

I joined the site when I realised I had so much going on in my pond and needed help identifying things and taking care I didn't hurt anything.  It has turned into a minor obsession, stalking my pond in the middle of the night, in the rain and trying to spot all things amphibian wherever I go!

Two years ago I was horrified to discover we had frogs, toads and slow worms in the garden, now they are my babies (except the slow worms, can't warm to them!).  I think it was the newts that did it though, they are just so funny to watch and very beautiful.

I hope you've got lots to look at too!

DidnÆt know an egret was a bird.

I'm jealous of you, I'd love to sit in the dark and watch activity in my garden pond. I really really really want a pond in our garden but my meanie mother wonÆt let me have one.   We've got a huge garden, it'd be ideal but she says no.   ItÆs not faaaiiirrr!!!!

I do go and check out a pond at a nearby golf course every so often though and thereÆs lots of tadpoles in summer and IÆve seen a couple of newts there before. I miss most of the action though cos I only go in the daytime. I have seen frogs getting jiggy with it from time to time in ponds though.   It's dead exciting to watch.

Keep nagging your mom Sue, a pond will change your life (for the better)

Ponds don't do well where I live, they attract too many cobras

I donÆt fancy having cobras in my garden, especially not near my bunny rabbit!

My mum is a right meanie, IÆve begged her for ages but she says no and gets right grumpy. ItÆd mean sheÆd have to do some work because I wouldnÆt be the one putting it in. IÆm a weakling and canÆt do hard manual work and I wouldnÆt want to get soil on my fingers anyway. My mumÆs boyfriend would probably do most of the work but they just donÆt get round to doing things, thereÆs a tonne of other gardening jobs and alterations that need doing first and they donÆt get round to doing them because theyÆre unmotivated. Plus our garden is on a bit of a slope but IÆm pretty sure a pond could be done, but neither of them are geared up for doing one. They just donÆt want to. They canÆt be bothered. If on the slim chance I ever move out of home IÆll have to pay someone to do one for me! IÆd love to be able to stroke my bunny and at the same time spectate frog bonking at night. ThatÆd be well wonderful.

Baby Sue, you could try making the pond yourself rather than expecting someone else to do it for you.  Have you asked your mum if she will let you dig a pond and spend your own money lining it etc?  You could ask for the things you need to do it as birthday and Christmas presents.  I am sure that if you show enough commitment your family will help you but that would mean getting your own hands dirty.  That is what life is like.

Myself?!

The thought never crossed my tiny mind of actually trying to do it myself!!! Dunno how my mum would feel about me digging a hole in her garden. IÆd need her permission, sheÆd have to tell me where IÆm allowed to do it, sheÆd have to oversee every little thing I do because she says IÆm pathetic and useless, I canÆt even use the microwave without being told off for doing something wrong , I doubt sheÆd feel comfortable with me bashing around in the garden or using her tools, I doubt sheÆd let me do it.  If I did start off digging a hole I bet sheÆd end up having to take over and sheÆd get really really grumpy with me. SheÆs scary when sheÆs grumpy. Dunno if I have the strength to dig a hole, the soil is hard ainÆt it? I was born with a defunct back and I get backache within minutes if I have to bend down. IÆve got skinny arms, I donÆt think I could dig a big hole. IÆd defo need an adult to help me (and preferably do all the work ). IÆll beg my mum again and see if sheÆs a bit more up for the idea now but I bet sheÆll just get angry with me and bite my head off. IÆve got money in my bank so the cost wouldnÆt matter much. IÆd really like a huge pond, one thatÆs got a deep end, and an island, but I think itÆs only a dream. I donÆt think our garden will ever see a pond. Life is full of disappointments.

I really donÆt think my mum would be up for a cobra. SheÆd probably prefer a pond to that but I whined at her again about a pond and the answer is still no.

BTW, one of my internet friends sent me a frog book the other day, itÆs all in German but the photos in it are amazing and thereÆs some albino looking frogs. TheyÆre white but have tiny black dots on them, theyÆre cool.

Baby Sue,

An easy short-term measure is to put a small plastic 'planter' at the edge of the garden. make sure it is close to cover, like a hedge, so the frogs don't have to walk across the lawn to get to it (cats & foxes etc.).

The one pictured is only about 2-feet long, and had frogs and toads using it within a week !

Takes 10 minutes to dig a small hole and drop it in. Add a brick or a breeze-block as a small island :P I once had 4 frogs and 2 toads in it at the same time!

Can you spot the frog??

Sorry Vicar, I didnÆt see your response cos I ainÆt visited here in ages. Your planter idea is top hot! ItÆs dead great that froggies use your planter but I donÆt need one now cos Baby Has some news. BabyÆs growing up! My meanie mummy is getting rid of me and IÆm buying my very own little house and IÆve found one that already comes with a pond and over 30 froggies! ItÆs a small pond but itÆs deep and has different levels and has a 25 year guarantee on the lining and the froggies come outside and sit on a tree stump in summer and catch a tan apparently?! The lady who owns the house right now showed me a photo of them! & thereÆs spawn in right now so soon there will be babies. The pond ainÆt been there long, all the froggies wandered away from the nearby lake into the garden. I ainÆt got no photo of the pond to show you but I can show you my new house.

ItÆs the middle one of these three and the pond is near the house with a few shrubs nearby and thereÆs a lawn in the front garden.

& hereÆs the view from the back and the lake is in the background on the left. ItÆs a National Trust lake.

As you can see behind the house is all wooded and frog friendly but the other way is built up and thereÆs a main road a couple of minutes away on foot but the lady says that her frogs stay nearby and donÆt wander away and IÆve only seen one squashed one on the cul de sac so I think theyÆve got a pretty good home. & I can keep an eye out on the road and if I see one ever I can rush out and put it to safety cos IÆm a good little girl. Me moving house might have a bad effect on my local toads though. IÆve always relied on walking down the frog catching road to work to spot fatalities for me to know which nights to go out frogging but I wonÆt be walking down that road no more so I wonÆt get a frog indicator of when to go out. But IÆve made sure my new house is still within range so that I can still go frogging cos I wouldnÆt want to leave all my babies to tackle the busy road by themselves cos that would be mean. IÆm dead excited to be getting a new house where my meanie mum wonÆt be around to shout at me. I hope I donÆt starve and die though, or even worser, let Henry (my bunny ) starve and die, Mummy went away for two weeks recently and I lost weight cos we ran out of microwave meals and Jaffa Cakes. & I ainÆt never been shopping on my own before. Do people here like the look of my new house? Daddy and Big Brother Chris says IÆm making the biggest mistake of my life buying that one, they donÆt like it one bit, I think itÆs the best house to choose though if it means it will aggravate them loads and make them angry with me. Mummy and Uncle Derek think itÆs good though and I think itÆs good. ItÆs dead nicely decorated inside and only needs paint on a few ceilings, thereÆs a few things to do but not much. HenryÆs going to have the spare bedroom and Uncle Derek is going to make him a pen in there. I ainÆt letting him have the full run of the house cos Henry does sloppy poos and sits on them and squidjes them and heÆd ruin the cream carpets in no time. Oh and BTW when my Mummy came back from holiday she brought me 4 glass frog ornaments. & in the toilet IÆm gonna put up my frog toilet roll holder. Uncle Derek saw it in a skip a few years ago and thought of me. When you pull the loo roll itÆs mouth open and closes. IÆve got lots of froggy things. IÆve got some big froggy slippers! IÆve got a bright green Kermit The Frog hoodie with red glitsy writing on that Mummy got me for my birthday which I look super cool wearing. The receptionist here went to France and she brought me back a fab, fab wood frog ornament and you stroke itÆs back with a stick and it makes a noise of a frog and I play with it loads. I got some great froggy knickers from Primark and theyÆre my favourist knickers ever cos theyÆre green and have frogs all over just like my avator. My pen pal gave me a necklace with a frog pendant on for my birthday and itÆs well ace and I love it heaps. & my German Auntie K on a Robbie Williams forum sent me a German book all about frogs, itÆs all in German so I donÆt understand it but the pictures are dead fantastic and I donÆt like words anyway. Frogs are well fab, I want more frog stuff.

PS. I re-located over 200 toads this year. Are you dead proud of me?   Are you?
